Mt. Hood Solutions Moves to New Plant
Environmental and Energy Initiatives
Make for
Leading Edge Manufacturing Facility
Work is under way to move the operational and manufacturing of Mt. Hood Solutions to a new facility in North Portland. The new plant will provide the 106-year-old company with 85,000 square feet of manufacturing, warehousing and office space. Once the move is complete, Mt. Hood Solutions will have increased capacity and warehousing space for their growing company.
What won’t be apparent to those who see the building at 14546 N. Lombard, will be the integrated environmental and energy sustainability innovations that are being incorporated into the new facility.
Included will be a rainwater collection system that will allow Mt. Hood to use captured rainwater in their manufacturing process, along with an improved and innovative water recycling and rewash system, that will additionally reduce the need for city water services.
The expansive warehouse in the building is all fully insulated, which will reduce energy consumption for the company, and provide a warmer working environment for employees. Additional energy savings will come from new energy efficient lighting, which has been installed in all parts of the facility.
Mt. Hood Solutions is also expanding a plastics recycling program at the plant to reduce their waste stream and allow them to reuse many containers, drums and other materials.
Other innovations completed by the company include conversion of all forklifts to electricity, delivery trucks now all use biodiesel and they are converting their vehicle fleet to hybrid.
“The payback for all this innovation is not short-term,” says Tom Mulflur, Mt. Hood President. “We just felt it was the right thing to do.”
The company has also adapted their product line to meet their goal of creating environmentally friendly, sustainable solutions for customers. They are providing customers with sustainable products by complying with the EPA’s Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative (SDSI) and participation in EPA’s Design for the Environment (DFE) program. To meet those requirements, Mt. Hood has voluntarily agreed to use safer surfactants in their products. Mt. Hood is one of the first companies nationally to begin following these guidelines. Additionally, packaging is being revamped to incorporate more and better recycling methods.
One other reflection of the company’s commitment to looking for new and better ways to work is their name. The company recently changed their name from Mt. Hood Chemical to Mt. Hood Solutions. The new name reflects the goals of meeting customer needs through product formulations, quality customer service and a corporate responsibility to the environment.
Mt. Hood Solutions has been in the business of making soaps, detergents and other cleaning products since 1902. The company serves hotels, restaurants, hospitals, manufacturing companies and wide variety of additional customers across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Northern California, Colorado and Northern Nevada. The company currently employs 110 people, with 45 located at the Portland headquarters.
